Common Wiped Film Distillation Problems: Part 2

Wiped film distillation can be problematic sometimes.

A material may run perfectly one time, and then the next time it gives you all kinds of trouble. These distillations can be finicky, even for the experienced practitioner.

Some problems that can develop are:

  • Feed material collects in the distillate. Sometimes the distillate SHOULD be water white but is actually yellow. Something is causing a little bit of the feed to jump over into the distillate.

  • Feed material foams upon entry of the still inlet Depending on the feed material it itself, the material can react going into the still inlet. It may foam violently, or spit and spatter.

  • Incomplete devolatilization The feed is run through the still and after the pass is complete there are sill volatiles remaining in the concentrate or residue side. Therefore, the material has to be passed through again, costing time and money.

However, there are simple solutions to all of the problems.
