Secrets of Wiped Film Distillation - Post 8
Toll Processing
Many companies stay away from wiped film distillation because the equipment is very expensive and there may not be many applications for that equipment. The cost of the equipment will not be offset by just a few products and long idle periods for that equipment.
However, there are many companies that will perform these processes for you. Many of the wiped film still manufacturers have processing plants where they use their own equipment to process for you. Because these plants are already built, toll processing can be a cost-effective way to launch a project.
My previous employer, Pope Scientific, Inc. runs a very good plant and can be perfect starting point for a project. Once the concept is proven and a few batches are produced, then you can make the decision if you want to purchase equipment or continue to toll process.
There are also processors who can handle industrial size volumes.
If your process could benefit from wiped film distillation technology, but cost of equipment is the barrier to entry, tolling could be the way to go. Reach out if you have any questions about this, I'm happy to discuss feasibility of a project with you.
